Room Acoustics at the Stadtcasino Basel and the Paul Sacher Hall
Dear Colleagues,
We are delighted to invite you to an exciting field trip focused on concert hall acoustics at two venues in Basel. Experience an orchestra rehearsal at the Stadtcasino Basel, gain exclusive insights into acoustics and recording technology, and explore the redesign of the Paul Sacher Hall. Dinner is optional.
Facts:
Meeting point: August 31, 2026, 12:00 p.m., Stadtcasino entrance, Konzertgasse 1, Basel
Moderators: Wolfgang Müller (Lugnao) and Ernst Neukomm (Riehen / Basel)
Following an introduction to the infrastructure of the Great Hall by Phillipp Sanwald, Technical Director, and Ernst Neukomm, certified measurement technician, we will discuss the question: “Why did the renovation measures audibly and negatively alter the hall’s acoustics?” Afterward, we will attend the rehearsal of the Basel Symphony Orchestra conducted by Markus Poschner (Mahler, Symphony No. 5). Afterward, we’ll share our impressions and gain insight into the microphone placement concept for concert recordings from Andreas Werner. Later in the afternoon, we’ll take the tram together to the Don Bosco Center, Waldenburgerstrasse 34, Basel, where Christiane Bangert of Kuster&Partner will present the acoustic redesign of the Paul Sacher Hall.
During the short lunch break (approx. 12:45 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.), you’re welcome to grab a bite to eat on your own at one of the nearby restaurants.
The official event ends around 6:00 p.m. Anyone who’d like to is welcome to round out the day with a group dinner at “Restaurant Aeschenplatz,” located at Aeschenplatz 1.
Please register in advance here.
We look forward to seeing you there!
