In this 60min webinar educators Jim Anderson, S. Alex Ruthmann and Dan Shores will give a hands-on report on how their concepts of teaching music performance, critical listening to immersive audio in class rooms changed to an online university approach within days in March 2020. Stories of teaching over different time zones with students scattered around the world (students in Australia, Korea and Europe being taught from a dining room in Brooklyn, NY) will be told and why going outside or a haircut are overrated.

Professor Jim Anderson teaches critical listening, surround and immersive sound recording at the Clive Davis Institute (CDI) of Recorded Music, Tisch School of the Arts at New York University (NYU). He is the inaugural chairman of the CDI. He is a multiple Grammy winner and Past President of the Audio Engineering Society (AES).

S. Alex Ruthmann is the Director of the NYU Music Experience Design Lab (MusEDLab), and core faculty in the Music and Audio Research Lab (MARL) at NYU Steinhardt. The MusEDLab researches and designs new technologies and experiences for music making, learning and engagement together with industry and community partners including the New York Philharmonic, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Peter Gabriel, Herbie Hancock, UNESCO, and the Rock and Roll Forever Foundation. Through the NYU Creative Experience Design Lab, (CXD Lab) at NYU Shanghai, Ruthmann recently launched a research group focused on creative learning in China. Alex Ruthman experienced the pandemic in Shanghai. He has been coaching and mentoring faculty at NYU Shanghai, and NYU Prague, as well as the Singapore Ministry of Education and will speak to best practices and approaches the faculty that he has collaborated with have employed.

Dan Shores is an Adjunct Assistant Professor, Music Production & Recording Technology at Shenandoah University, Virginia. He is a multiple Grammy nominated sound engineer and chief engineer of Sono Luminus label and studios. Dan started remote productions via Zoom and audiomovers.com during the lock-down with producers in Ohio and North Carolina while the musicians where airlocked away from his control room in the studio in Virginia.
